What Happens During a Pediatric Dental Exam?

During a dental exam, our pediatric dental team gently cleans your child’s teeth and carefully checks for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other potential concerns. We may take dental X-rays to get a closer look at developing teeth and roots. To help prevent cavities, we might recommend protective treatments such as fluoride applications or dental sealants.

Our visits are not just about treatment—they’re also about empowerment. We teach children how to brush and floss properly, using age-appropriate demonstrations to make home care fun and effective.

As your child grows, their dental needs change. For older kids and teens, dental exams cover everything mentioned above, plus timely discussions about risks such as tobacco use or other habits that can affect oral health. We also track tooth alignment, conducting pre-orthodontic screenings to spot any need for future orthodontic treatment.

How Often Should Children Have Dental Exams?

We generally recommend that children see the dentist for a check-up every six months. However, if your child has unique needs or is at higher risk for dental problems, we may suggest more frequent visits.

It’s best to start early—the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises bringing your child in within six months after their first tooth appears, or no later than their first birthday. Getting an early start sets the stage for lifelong dental health.

For infants ages 6 months to 1 year, special attention is given to:

• Checking for baby bottle tooth decay
• Monitoring pacifier use and thumb/finger sucking habits
• Demonstrating effective techniques for cleaning your baby’s gums and new teeth
• Providing advice on dietary fluoride intake
