Experiences High Anxiety: Some children have a phobia that prevents them from sitting still or cooperating, even for simple cleanings.

Requires Extensive Treatment: If a child needs multiple fillings, crowns, or extractions, sedation can allow us to complete more work in a single visit, reducing the number of appointments and overall stress.

Has a Strong Gag Reflex: A sensitive gag reflex can make dental work uncomfortable or even impossible without help to relax the muscles.

Has Special Healthcare Needs: Children with physical, cognitive, or behavioral challenges may find it difficult to remain still for the duration of a procedure. Sedation helps keep them safe and comfortable.

Is Very Young: Pre-cooperative toddlers who need urgent treatment often benefit from sedation to prevent sudden movements that could compromise safety.

Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas")

This is the mildest form of sedation and is extremely common. Your child breathes a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, comfortable mask. It produces a feeling of relaxation and euphoria—some kids describe it as feeling "floaty" or "giggly."

The Benefit: It works quickly and wears off within minutes of removing the mask. Your child remains fully awake and can talk to us, but they care much less about the sights and sounds of the procedure.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For children who are more anxious or need a deeper level of relaxation, we may prescribe a liquid medication to be taken in our office before the procedure starts.

The Benefit: Your child will feel drowsy and very relaxed. They may drift into a light sleep but can still respond to voices or gentle touch. A major advantage is the amnesic effect—most children remember very little of the appointment afterwards, which helps preserve their long-term view of the dentist as a non-scary place.

IV Sedation / General Anesthesia

For extensive cases or children with severe anxiety/special needs, we work with board-certified anesthesiologists to provide deep sedation or general anesthesia. This is performed right here in our state-of-the-art facility or at a local hospital if necessary.

The Benefit: The child is completely asleep and unaware of the treatment. All work is completed in one session, and they wake up with no memory of the procedure.

Pre-Sedation Evaluation: We review your child’s full medical history, current medications, and airway health before recommending any sedation.

Continuous Monitoring: During sedation, we use hospital-grade monitors to track vital signs like heart rate, oxygen saturation (pulse oximetry), and blood pressure.

Highly Trained Team: Our doctors and staff hold current certifications in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and are trained to manage airway safety and emergencies.
