Pulpotomy

At our pediatric dental practice, we recommend extractions only when absolutely necessary because baby teeth play a vital role in your child’s dental growth and development. If a tooth becomes severely decayed or injured, it’s important to treat it promptly to protect your child’s oral health and smile. In cases like these, our pediatric dentist may suggest a pulpotomy.

What is a Pulpotomy?

A pulpotomy, sometimes called a “baby tooth root canal,” is a special treatment used when decay or injury has reached the pulp—the soft, inner tissue of the tooth where nerves and blood vessels are found. If left untreated, this kind of damage can cause pain, sensitivity, and even an abscess, which could eventually lead to losing the tooth. A pulpotomy removes the affected tissue, helping to save the tooth and prevent further complications.

How Does the Pulpotomy Procedure Work?

During a pulpotomy, our pediatric dentist carefully numbs and cleans the area around the affected tooth to keep your child comfortable. We then remove the damaged or infected pulp from the inner part of the tooth, making sure all decay is cleared away. Once the area is clean, we place a special medicated material inside the tooth to help prevent infection. The tooth is then sealed, often with a dental crown or another type of restoration, to protect it and help it stay strong until it’s naturally ready to fall out.

We understand that children (and parents!) can feel anxious about dental treatments, especially anything involving the words “root canal.” Rest assured, modern dental techniques allow us to perform pulpotomies quickly and comfortably. Our main goal is to keep your child pain-free while preserving their healthy smile for years to come.
